Folic acid, the most common form of folate in supplements and fortified foods, requires the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) to be converted to L-methylfolate, the activated form of folate used by the body for many biochemical reactions. About half of the population have genetic variations that reduce the ability of the MTHFR enzyme to make this conversion. For this population, L-methylfolate supplementation is far more effective in providing this form of folate.*

Folate has a new unit of measure called Dietary Folate Equivalents (DFE).
You may have noticed the supplement facts on the back of the label have changed due to new regulations. Supplemental sources of folate are more potent than dietary folate, so they will have a higher DFE than folate in food. Even though the amount of folate in Metabolic formulas has not changed, you will see an increase in label claim and percent Daily Value (%DV) due to this difference in potency. To make the conversion, multiply the previous folate claim by 1.7.
